Advocate Spotlight: Rachel Running for Hope on May 20

Rachel serves as a writer and photographer on the Restoring Hope Ministries team.

Rachel and her husband, Matt

Can I just take a moment to be honest? Running… is like punishment. Running is the proverbial timeout that I put myself into when I eat two donuts instead of two eggs in the morning, or need to lose one dress size by next month. I run only when I need to accomplish something that requires sacrifice of something I like to do, but failed to sacrifice. (Like eating what I want, or reading a book on the couch instead of going to my kickboxing class, for example.) I can’t stand it. I cannot actually summon to memory more than a handful of people that do like it.

The best lesson I ever learned about running, though, is that it doesn’t have to be in retribution for something I should have done differently. It can be something that I choose to do to make this world a better place. I’m specifically addressing running for a cause–running for my Congolese brothers and sisters. Sisters like Elalie.

By choosing this race, your foot-to-ground forward motion, is literal forward motion for the Congolese people, and in that, the working hands and feet of Christ. The funds raised will help fulfill RHM’s mission of restoring, training, and sustaining our Congolese brothers and sisters.

So, as much as I hate running, (have I mentioned that I hate running?) I’ll be there, and my kids will be there on May 20th, sneakers to pavement, running for hope.
