WHY DID RESTORING HOPE MINISTRIES GET STARTED?

Restoring Hope Ministries emerged through Cornerstone Church in Easton, Pa. in response to the congregation learning of the severe suffering of our brothers and sisters in DR Congo. It started with a phone call in December 2008 from a Congolese father to his son, Bagudekia Alobeyo, a beloved friend of several Cornerstone families. Bagu’s father reported that their village had been attacked by a vicious militia called The Lord’s Resistance Army, led by a violent warlord named Joseph Kony. The fighters left a trail of devastation in their path. When Cornerstone families heard of the trouble Bagu’s family was in, they responded with prayer and generous contributions to help rescue 24 members of the family from the danger zone.

This provided a personal perspective on an international crisis in this region, with 5.4 million people having died as a result of ongoing civil war in the eastern Congo.

Like Paul when he encountered the man from Macedonia saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us,” we sensed God calling us to respond to the severe suffering of our sisters and brothers in eastern DRC (Acts 16:6-10).

We approached church leaders in the DRC and asked them how we could help. Restoring Hope Ministries formed in response to their identified greatest needs.

WHAT IS THIS MINISTRY ABOUT?

Restoring Hope Ministries emphasizes restoring through biblical trauma healing; training through post-secondary education, particularly pastoral and business/vocational training; and sustaining through the development of micro- and macro-enterprise. How? Through CHURCH-TO-CHURCH PARTNERSHIPS. We rally churches in the U.S. to partner with our sister churches in eastern Congo. We are beginning with a partnership between Cornerstone Church in Easton, Pa. and the CECA-20 Church in Dungu, DRC.

WHAT CHURCH-TO-CHURCH PARTNERSHIPS CURRENTLY EXIST?

Cornerstone Church has partnered with the CECA-20, or Communauté Evangélique au Centre de l’Afrique, an Evangelical Community of Christians in northeast DRC.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING CENTER?

Restoring Hope Ministries addresses the underlying need for spiritual and emotional recovery through Biblical trauma healing, a ministry initiative of American Bible Society. Church leaders in the DRC have reported that those who have come through the trauma healing program are coming to faith in Christ and experiencing life change.

Once the Congolese emerge with greater spiritual and emotional health, in many cases, they lack the skills and knowledge to pursue a vocational direction. The training center will be built in Dungu, where the CECA-20 church is located. It will prepare now strengthened Congolese to engage their previously untapped gifts in ways that can feed their families and add value to their communities.

WHY SHOULD I GIVE TO A MINISTRY HELPING PEOPLE IN DRC?

Jesus teaches that the two greatest commandments for His followers are to love God and love others (Matt. 22:36-40).  If someone were attacking a city near you, you would care. Well, they may be in another part of the world, but the suffering experienced by our Congolese brothers and sisters is beyond comprehension. As believers, we are called to love them—in real, tangible ways. We can’t close our eyes and pretend we never knew.

We have the privilege of serving as Jesus’ ambassadors—allowing Him to work through us to bring about healing, justice, equipping, disciple-making, and love.

God sees the suffering of our Congolese brothers and sisters, and He cares. He is mobilizing His body of believers in the U.S. to respond and partner with churches in the DRC.

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?

We all have our part to play in the body of Christ—to fulfill the Great Commission. Your part matters.

If you’re an individual:

You can give to support trauma healing, the training center, or micro-enterprise. You can sign up for our prayer team and battle in the spiritual realm on behalf of our Congolese brothers and sisters. You can give up a week of vacation and participate in the bike tour to help raise awareness and funds, so RHM can help.

If you’re a church:

Mobilize your congregation and partner with another church in DRC. We will walk you through the journey.

Visit our Pray, Give, Fundraise or Bike Tour pages or contact us to discern how God may be calling you and/or your church to do God’s will “on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:10). We’re  excited to get to know you and serve with you!

We will also benefit from the abundance of spiritual strength coming from the church in DR Congo. Partnerships work both ways. Both partners give. Both partners receive.
