The Bible tells us that David, the composer of most of the Psalms, was a man after God’s own heart. Why? Because David was perfect? No. He was not perfect by any means. In fact he had made some terrible choices in his life including the sin of adultery, followed up by murdering his lover’s husband. But deep down David desired to walk upright with a pure heart before the Lord and God knew the true desires of David’s heart. In spite of his weaknesses David had a heart for the things of God. He had a heart of repentance and humility. He desired to serve the Lord with holiness and righteousness. He desired to be upright. These are the things that God saw in David. These are the characteristics that the Lord took notice of. Man looks on the outward things, but God looks on the heart. (I Samuel 16:7) One of David’s deepest desires was that he longed for the courts and the presence of the Lord. His heart ached within him to be close to the Lord that he loved so much. David knew the mercy and grace of God. He knew what it meant to be forgiven of even the worst sins. He knew the joy of going into the house of the Lord to worship and praise the Most High God with a clean slate. It is no wonder that David penned the words… “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” “Forever” means: constantly; continually; always; unceasingly; everlastingly; endlessly and eternally. On earth, though not physically attainable, David desired God’s presence more than anything. But through eternity He was assured of it. David had a hope and a confidence that he would spend eternity with the Lord. Continually without ceasing. He was sure of it. He knew the God of his salvation. He knew that his Redeemer lived and He looked forward to the inheritance that awaited him in heaven. Does your heart long for the courts of the Lord? Do you desire to be in His presence? Do you know your Redeemer? Have your sins have been washed away by the blood of Jesus? If yes, then an eternal inheritance awaits you. Like David, you too will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Continually without ceasing. What an awesome reality to look forward to! |
