Psalms 92:5  O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.

Psalms 95:4  In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.

There is something about the deep that intrigues us as humans.  We always want to know what’s under the surface.  We want to go below what we can see on top.  However, in our Christian walk sometimes it’s just the opposite.  Many of us are satisfied to remain on the surface.  How sad for those who think that way.  They are content to stay in the shallow waters where they feel safe.  They are comfortable just casually knowing God.  They are not interested in developing a deeper relationship with him.   Unfortunately their lives are also very mundane, boring and they continually struggle with an emptiness that is never satisfied.  But God invites us all to come out into the deep with him.  He challenges all of us to step out of the shallow waters and come in over our heads.  Have you ever seen a grown man swimming in the kiddy pool?  Of course not!  The kiddy pool is fine for toddlers and young children but mature adults look ridiculous.

Unfortunately some of us are like that spiritually.  Many of us are afraid to leave the kiddy pool.  We do not like the feeling of not be able to “touch bottom” because swimming in deep water requires trust.   But God longs for us to trust him more.  He wants to bring us into a deeper relationship with him than where we are now.  He desires to show us the hidden treasures of Himself that are not found on the surface.  The richer things of the spirit can only be found in the deeper places.  God wants us to go beyond the surface and beyond what we can see.    He desires for us to seek the hidden things in him.  None of us can find God by casually looking for him.   We must be hungry for more of him.   Deeper things are not cheap.  They come with a cost.  To have a deeper well you must dig for it.  To have a deeper friendship you must be willing to be real and honest with what’s below the exterior.  To find a valuable diamond you must search far below the surface and likewise to have the deeper things of God we must be willing to seek for them.  Jeremiah 29:13  says, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

To find the deeper things of God we must be willing to seek with all of our heart and not just part of it.  We must put all of ourselves into developing a greater depth in our relationship with him.  Our prayer life needs to deepen.  Our bible reading times must go from skimming the pages to diligently studying them.   When we seek with all of our hearts God promises that we will not seek in vain.  If we search for Him we will find him.  He assures us that the deeper things can be ours if we want them.

The question is, do you want them?  Are you content to stay in the shallow waters or does your heart desire to swim in the deep?  Are you satisfied with a small amount of God in your life or do you hunger for more of Him?  God invites you to come into the deep today.  He challenges you to take a step of faith and come out where you cannot “touch bottom”.  You won’t have to fear.  God will hold you up and teach you to swim there.  He desires to show you all the hidden treasures and riches that are yours in Christ.  But you must come.   I encourage you today to set your heart on seeking the deeper things of God.  You will not be disappointed!  God has promised it!

Prayer Suggestion:  Lord, make me hungry for more of you.  My heart desires to go deeper in my relationship with you.  Give me the courage to step out of the shallow waters and go where my feet can’t “touch bottom”.
