Mark 10:46-52 And they came to Jericho: and as he went
out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind
Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. And
when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus,
thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And
many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great
deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still, and
commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto
him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. And he, casting away
his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I
should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive
my sight. And
Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And
immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way. |

Is it impossible to imagine that Jesus asked a blind man what he wanted Him to do for him? We know that God is all knowing. We know that He sees our need before we tell him about it. Why would he then ask this question? It wasn’t that Jesus needed to ask the question. It was Bartimaeus who needed to answer it. He was the one who needed to be honest and humble to admit his need to the Lord. It is when we speak our need and hear it in our own ears that we take ownership of it and admit that we are desperate. An alcoholic will rarely ever receive help until he is willing to speak out loud, “I am an alcoholic, I need help!” To just think it is not enough. He must be willing to speak it. To hear himself be honest and to become humble enough to ask. This is when we are helped. When we do this there is something in us that breaks. Our self-sufficiency is broken and we clear the obstructions that once kept us from healing. Jesus was not trying to hear it for himself or be cruel in asking. He already knew the need and it was His desire to heal Bartimaeus’ blindness and give him sight. But he wanted Bartimaeus to speak it so that in acknowledging it he would make way in his spirit to receive what he asked for. In his humbleness and honesty Bartimaeus gave an open door to his faith. He asked humbly, believing he would receive and he did. Are you sometimes afraid to speak your need? Does pride keep you from admitting what is true? Speak your need to the Lord, whatever it is. He already knows it, but in doing so you will be humbly acknowledging your need for a touch from Jesus. God will not disappoint you. James 4:10 says, Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. Prayer Suggestion: Lord, I know that you know my needs but I will be honest with myself and speak them to you… (Take time now to pray and speak your needs to God)
